“Why Should We Hire You?” Interview Question And Guides For Experienced Candidates And Recent Graduates
“Why should we hire you?”
Note that the above question is related to "What can you bring to the company?". So, the guidelines below can be used when asked any of the above two questions. The goal is to continue to capitalise on the good first impression you made.
Key Point: A smart answer to the above question will demonstrate the skills you possess that will make you to be successful in the role, as well as your potential to bring a new perspective to the business of the company. You need to make the interviewer to understand and clearly see that your skills, experience and personality, uniquely put you in a position to advance the objectives of the organization.
Like This:
1. Chose a specific problem you faced and addressed [in your current or previous job or as a student or intern], that is relevant to the job you're interviewing for.
E.g: Managing purchasing and supplies under tight budget
2. Start your response by demonstrating the skills you possess, which helped you to handle that relevant problem you faced, and that will make you to be successful in the role:
E.g: “My problem-solving abilities allow me to work extremely well under pressure, which I understand is a common occurrence in this role...
3. Describe the nature of the problem you faced and what you did to fix it:
E.g: ".... In a previous position as the purchasing lead, I had to decide which supplies to order to stay within the budget, but I had a limited amount of time to make a decision. I quickly created a spreadsheet that helped me compare manufacturers’ prices and was able to order the necessary supplies on time and within our budget...
4. Describe the result(s) that you achieved. Quantify the achievement(s), where possible. It is always more credible.
E.g: "... I used the spreadsheet throughout the rest of my time with the company. It helped to save $745,510 for the company....
5. Summarise by letting the interviewer to know what you will be doing, going forward, for the company you're interviewing to join:
E.g: "...I will bring the same interest and motivation for making an impact here at XYZ Company.”
Here is how it will Look Like Together:
Example: “My problem-solving abilities allow me to work extremely well under pressure, which I understand is a common occurrence in this role. In a previous position as the purchasing lead, I had to decide which supplies to order to stay within the budget, but I had a limited amount of time to make a decision. I quickly created a spreadsheet that helped me compare manufacturers’ prices and was able to order the necessary supplies on time and within our budget. I used the spreadsheet throughout the rest of my time with the company. It helped to save $745,510 for the company. I will bring the same interest and motivation for making an impact here at XYZ Company.”
