Hello Tractor is an AgTech company that offers proprietary mobile technology which allows farmers to connect with local tractor owners and book a machine for as long as they need it.
Prior to launching Hello Tractor, Oliver was an investment banker and he was inspired by the observation that while Africa has the largest inventory of arable land on earth, crop yields lag behind the rest of the world because of a lack of mechanization.
It was found that in sub-Saharan Africa, there were only about 27 tractors per 100 square kilometres of agricultural lands compared to roughly 200 tractors global average
The discovery made Oliver to launch Hello Tractor as an opportunity for technology to help farmers pay for the use of tractors even if they cannot afford their own.
Hello Tractor started by enabling famers to send a coded service request to an SMS short code and, within minutes, get a tractor, or any other farming machinery they want.
Presently, the company offers software and tracking devices that allow farmers to book tractor services from local tractor owners via a mobile phone app.
It has also partnered with IBM to integrate blockchain and artificial intelligence elements into their technology.
Hello Tractor business model includes helping farmers to get the farming machineries they need to boost productivity, helping owners of farm machineries to rent their equipments with ease.
It also partners with Heifer to operate a pay-as-you-go model that provides financing for entrepreneurs who want to start a tractor service business but lack traditional forms of collateral.
The execution of Hello Tractor has been so successful that it is currently serving over 630,000 smallholder farmers across different countries in Africa, including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda.
Hello Tractor is a winner of the AYuTe Africa Challenge and received a share of the US$1.5 million grant for winners, along with ongoing support from a team of expert advisers.
The firm has raised a total of $4.4M in funding over 7 rounds.
It is using the funds to optimize its products and to finance tractors for young entrepreneurs in Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda.
